How to choose a pergola or gazebo

A pergola gives filtered shade and defines an outdoor room; a hardtop gazebo gives full rain and sun protection. Decide how you will use the space, then pick the size and material.

1

Pergola or gazebo

Pergolas have an open or louvered roof for light shade. Hardtop gazebos have a solid steel or polycarbonate roof that sheds rain and can shelter a hot tub or dining set year-round.

2

Size

Allow about 10 × 10 ft for a small seating area, 10 × 12 to 12 × 14 ft for a dining table, and 12 × 16 ft or more for a sectional plus dining.

3

Material

Cedar looks natural and resists rot; aluminum and steel need little maintenance. Galvanized steel roofs on hardtop gazebos are the most weather-resistant.

4

Anchoring and permits

Every structure must be anchored to a deck, concrete or footings against wind. Check local rules: some towns require a permit for structures over a certain size.

Questions & answers

Can a hardtop gazebo handle snow?

Many are rated for a specific snow load in the manual. In heavy snow areas, clear the roof after big storms.

How long does assembly take?

Plan on a full day with two or three people for most 10 × 12 ft kits, longer for larger or cedar models.

How is it delivered?

Pergolas and gazebos ship in several heavy boxes by freight, curbside. Boxes may arrive on different days.
