How to choose a fireplace or heater
Electric fireplaces plug into a wall outlet and need no venting. Gas stoves and heaters give stronger heat that keeps working in a power outage. Start from the room size and what fuel you have.
Room size
Electric fireplaces usually give about 5,000 BTU, enough to supplement heat in a room of up to about 400 sq ft. Gas units from 10,000 to 30,000 BTU can heat much larger spaces.
Vent-free gas
Ventless heaters are very efficient because all the heat stays in the room, but they must have an oxygen depletion sensor and are not allowed in some states and cities, including California. Check your local code first.
Dual fuel
Dual-fuel models run on natural gas or propane, so one heater works in more homes.
Outdoor fire
Propane fire pit tables bring flame to the patio with no smoke and no ash, and many carry a CSA certification.
Questions & answers
Do electric fireplaces heat a room?
Yes, as supplemental heat for one room. They also run with the flame effect only and the heater off, for year-round ambiance.
Is a ventless heater safe?
Certified models include an oxygen depletion sensor that shuts the unit off before oxygen gets low. Use a carbon monoxide detector in the room and follow the maximum room-size rules in the manual.
Will a gas heater work in a power outage?
Many blue-flame and infrared models with a millivolt or battery ignition keep heating without electricity; blower fans need power.
