How to choose a swing set

A good swing set grows with your kids for ten years or more. Choose by the space you have, the age of your children and the wood or material it is built from.

1

Space and safety zone

U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission guidelines call for a use zone of at least 6 ft around the play set, and more in front of and behind swings. Measure the yard with that zone included.

2

Age range

Toddlers need low platforms and bucket swings; older kids want taller decks, rock walls, monkey bars and longer slides.

3

Material

Cedar resists rot and insects naturally and is the standard for quality wooden sets. Check the lumber size of the main beams: thicker beams mean a sturdier set.

4

Surface

Put wood mulch, rubber mulch or sand under the set, not grass or concrete, to soften falls.

Questions & answers

How long does it take to assemble?

Most wooden playsets take two adults one to two days. Pre-cut and pre-drilled kits save a lot of time.

Does a wooden swing set need maintenance?

Check bolts every season and reseal the wood every one to two years to keep it looking good.

How is it delivered?

Playsets ship as heavy boxed kits by freight, curbside. Keep the boxes flat and dry until you assemble.
